Making candles is an amazing and enjoyable hobby.

Whether you’re making candles as gifts or for yourself, the fragrance of scented candles can help you and others feel inspired.

Candle making is about spending time doing a craft you love,.

It’s also experimentation and that’s the trick to discovering how to make all sorts of different candles…

There are a few basic supplies for making most candles:

  • Wax
  • Wicks
  • Candle making mold or container
  • Wax melter
  • Candle making thermometer
  • Fragrances
  • Dyes
  • Putty for molds

First decide on a wax you’d like to start with, there are three different kinds to choose from:

  1. Paraffin wax
  2. Soy wax
  3. Beeswax

Paraffin wax is most commonly used in candles, this wax is found at most candle making stores.

Soy wax is all natural made from soybeans and cleans up easily with soap and water.

Beeswax is all natural too. Beeswax candles is often the easiest because you simply wrap a sheet of beeswax tightly around a wick then seal it with your thumb, which means no melting is required.

Allow me to explain…

To begin, simply spread newspapers around the candle making area.

First you melt your paraffin or soy wax and it must be double-boiled.

Place a large pot, about half-filled with water on a burner over low-medium heat, put a melter in the water and gradually add wax pieces into the melter.

Wait for the wax to melt so you can add coloring or fragrance as desired.

How to Make Molded Candles:

Step 1: Cut the wick 50 mm (5 cm) or 2 inches taller than the candle

Step 2: Thread the wick through the hole at the bottom of the mold, plug the outside of the hole with putty.

Step 3: Position a pencil or rod over the top of the mold, tie the top of the wick to it, centering the wick.

Tip: If the mold is cardboard, plastic or glass, heat the wax to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If the mold is metal, then heat the wax to 190 degrees.

You can use a candle or candy thermometer to measure this.

Step 4: Wait for the right temperature, lift the melter by the handle and slowly pour the wax into the mold.

Step 5: Allow the wax to cool for twelve hours.

Now refrigerate for twelve more hours, finally your candle is ready to be removed.

To make votives and other small container candles, you can use pre-tabbed wicks by simply placing them in the center of the votive candle molds or containers…

Simply pour the wax mixture over, let stand for twelve hours, refrigerating the votives.

That’s how to make your own candles, candle making is fun and enjoyable!
