OK. Let’s break the basics into simple bit size pieces.
Candle Wax: Candle wax is the most essential element in candle making.
- The most common type of wax used is paraffin wax, its easy to find paraffin wax and inexpensive.
- Paraffin wax is a petroleum based wax that is valued for its odorless smoke and ability to retain shape.
Beeswax is my personal favorite and also very popular because it is a natural wax with a beautiful natural texture and scent.
- Beeswax is known for producing longer burn times.
- Beeswax is more expensive than paraffin, more likely to stick in candle molds and more difficult to scent.
Soy wax is becoming incredibly popular among candle makers as its a natural ingredient, less expensive than beeswax, environmentally friendly, slow melting, easy to scent, and gives off less soot when burning.
Candle Wicks: The type of wick you select for a candle depends on the type of wax you are working with, how large the finished candle will be, and how much fragrance you want as a end result…
Candle wicks can vary according to thickness and material:
- Thicker wicks burn with larger flames, melting the candle wax faster.
- Thinner wicks burn with a smaller flame which depending on your candle size can result in only the inner portion of the candle melting.
Candle Dyes: Colors and dye come in a variety of forms including chips, flakes, liquids, crystals and powders.
- All dyes have to be handled carefully because it’s concentrated it will stain almost anything.
- When working with dyes always be careful not too add too much as this will affect how your candle burns.
- Also, do not overheat the dye as this can cause the color to become unstable and you’ll see your candles change colors a couple days later.
Candle Making Fragrance: The fragrance or scent can be purchased in solid or liquid format. Some people also prefer to use natural herbs.
Tip: Be careful not to add to much fragrance to your candles as this can cause the candle wax to take on a rough or pitted surface texture.
Also, make sure you add the fragrance as the last step or some of the scent evaporates.
