Gel Candle Making

What is a gel candle?

Why are gel candles growing in popularity?

Gel candle making, some people say the candle burns the same as regular wax candles?

It’s true…although, gel candle wax isn’t a solid wax!

Yes! Gel candles burn the same way as all wax candles do, however, gel wax is made to be different.

Allow me to explain…

Gel wax candles are made from oil.

Here are some gel candles ideas:

  • Gel candles for weddings
  • Gel candles with shells…

You see, gel candles are made of 95% mineral oil and 5% polymer resin.

The resin is basically a powder, and something magic happens when it’s mixed with the mineral oil…all of a sudden it’s transformed into a gel.

Gel wax comes in three different types:

  1. High density
  2. Medium density
  3. Low density…

That means a thicker gel can hold suspended decorations within the candle.

And the higher the density, the more fragrance the gel can hold too.

Keep in mind, a thicker gel takes longer to melt and is harder to pour.

The steps that go into making a paraffin wax candle, for example melting the wax and pouring the wax into a mold are the same as making gel candles…

The candle making equipment used and the techniques are slightly different.

Traditionally, most candle makers will use a double boiler to melt paraffin wax and other types of candle wax.

Tip: Gel wax takes way too long to melt using a double boiler.

That’s why many gel candle makers have turned to multi-cookers to get the job done more effectively, (i.e, a multi-cooker is quicker like a deep fryer).

Typically the base is metal with a non-stick coating…

The multi-cooker uses a separate heating element with a temperature dial so you can get a higher range of temperatures to melt the gel wax.

Tip: The gel wax is melted directly in the multi-cooker.

Although the multi-cooker has a built in temperature control dial, it’s very important to use a thermometer because you want to make sure the gel is melted at the right temperature.

Gel candles how to make – use a metal or hard plastic to stir the gel wax...

Tip: You can embed items in your gel candles and create all sorts of special effects and by using a wooden spoon you can easily adds bubbles to the gel.

Firstly, the most important safety factor is to always remember that gel candles explode and gel candle wax can actually catch fire.

Safety Tip: Always make sure a chemical fire extinguisher is on hand.

Is it possible to change the color of the gel candle wax by using dyes?

Liquid candle dyes are perfect for gel candles because the dye maintains the translucency of the gel.

It only takes a very small amount of the candle dye to actually change the color of the wax, even a drop of dye can be too much.

Tip: You should never use crayons, clothing dye, food coloring or soap dyes in gel candle wax.

Adding the above items means the gel candle won’t burn properly because gel wax is not made specifically like candles.

What if the possibilities are only limited by your imagination?

Well, the exciting part is in creating wonderful candles with gel wax, the sky is the only limit.

Gel candle making means endless possibilites, and because gel candles allow you to easily embed decorations directly into the wax for any desired affect.

Imagine embedding rose petals for a floating affect within the gel candle…

There are so many ways to use gel candle supplies or make use of gel candle kits, and it’s really such a clever and unique way to personalize a gift.

Imagine the possibilities if you’re making a gel candle for someone special.
